Our Changing World

In my last post, I presented some facts from the presentation ‘Shift Happens’ and I said I would continue those, so here goes:
1. In 2002 Nintendo invested more than $140 million in research and development whilst the U.S. Federal Government spent less than half as much on Research and Innovation in Education.
2. 1 out of every 8 couples married in the U.S. last year met online.
3. There are over 2.7 billion searches performed on Google each month!
4. The number of text messages sent and received every day exceeds the population of the planet.
5. There are about 540,000 words in the English language . . . About 5 times as many as during Shakespeare’s time.
6. More than 3,000 new books are published daily.
7. It’s estimated that a week’s worth of New York Times contains more information than a person was likely to come across in a lifetime in the 18th century.
8. It’s estimated that 40 exabytes (that’s 4.0 x 1019) of unique new information will be generated worldwide this year – that’s estimated to be more than in the previous 5,000 years.
9. The amount of new technical information was doubling every 2 years – It was predicted to double every 72 hours by 2010.
10. Predictions are that by 2023, a $1,000 computer will exceed the computation capability of the Human Brain – Predictions are that by 2049 a $1,000 computer will exceed the computational capabilities of the human race.

What does this mean to you? – If you do not embrace technology, then you are likely to be increasingly ‘out of touch’ with the majority of your peers. Obviously it will depend on your age, your current lifestyle and who your peers are, but as we can see above, we live in a world of ever increasing, ever faster and evermore information. There is no wonder that we often talk of information overload and therein is one of our bigger problems – finding and using the information we personally need whilst not becoming overloaded with the myriad of information that we are bombarded with each day! Even better, utilizing the need for information to help you to live the lifestyle you want!
Until next time……………
